Soil Degradation Awareness Campaign

The Soil Degradation Awareness Campaign (SDAC) is a vital initiative under JDF which is launched by Bikram Jha and Aman Raj on World Soil Day, December 5. This campaign addresses the alarming issue of soil degradation and promotes sustainable farming practices. It is a joint effort under JDF's Farmer Welfare Project in association with the Center for Climate Change & Environment Protection (CCCEP) and the Center for Agriculture & Rural Development (CARD). The campaign begins in Patna, Bihar, and aims to expand nationwide to empower farmers and protect one of the Earth's most valuable resources: soil.

Why Soil Health Matters

Soil is the foundation of life on Earth, but its degradation threatens food security, ecosystems, and livelihoods worldwide. Here’s why this campaign is critical:

  • Global Soil Crisis:
    • Over 33% of the Earth's soil is already degraded (FAO).
    • If current trends continue, 90% of soils could be degraded by 2050.
  • India’s Soil Challenge:
    • 30% of Indian soil is impacted by erosion, salinity, or depletion (ICAR).
    • Soil degradation costs India $48 billion annually (TERI).
  • Food Security Risk: Healthy soils produce 95% of our food, and degradation threatens the global food supply.
  • Carbon Storage: Soils store 2-3 times more carbon than the atmosphere, making them critical for combating climate change.
  • Farmer Impact: Poor soil health directly affects farmers' productivity and income, especially in rural areas.

Goals of SDAC

The Soil Degradation Awareness Campaign (SDAC) aims to:

  1. Raise Awareness: Educate communities about the causes and effects of soil degradation.
  2. Promote Sustainable Farming: Advocate for techniques like crop rotation, organic farming, and reduced chemical use.
  3. Empower Farmers: Provide tools, training, and resources to help farmers restore soil health.
  4. Encourage Soil Conservation: Highlight the role of healthy soils in food security and climate resilience.
  5. Support Policy Advocacy: Push for stronger policies to prevent soil erosion and improve land management.
